In this weeks New (mad) Scientist they've got a report of plans to solve all our energy problems by using large solar arrays to generate power that is then transmitted to earth. The three plans can be summed up as follows:

  1. Have an orbiting satellite with a powerful microwave beam firing at the earth.
  2. Put a microwave beam on the moon and bounce it off a satellite at the earth.
  3. Put a massive lense in front of the sun.

1 never worked that well in Sim City since it had a tendency to zap large parts of your city, 2 is Austin Powers 2 and 3 is the plot to the next Bond Film.
