OK, I've managed to do a bit of modelling using XDE now and if you can get by without it crashing totally it's actually a lot nicer to use than Rose. The IDE is where UML has always had to be, and although TogetherSoft had a good attempt with their Java modeller the C++ was always let down by not being inside visual studio. XDE is slow on my laptop though, which is a pain since it should be seemless. There's also no automatic synchronisation of your model, which I think is a shame because if you're documenting and not designing then you want your model to always be up to date. Once you have the main diagrams made then if they're automatically updated as you're refactoring then you don't have to think about them for most of your small changes.
