The solution to my broken copy of XP was simple in the end: reinstall the latest service pack.

I've just upgraded XP home to XP pro on this machine and I've noticed the following issues:

  • The installer can't handle having XP pro and Longhorn CDs in both your CD drives when setup restarts. This is understandable.
  • Symantec virus checker gives a whole load of "Tampered" errors when you restart. This is good.
  • Office refuses to run afterwards and seems to need reinstalling. This is inexcusable.

If I remember rightly there were a whole load of tests in the "Designed for Windows XXXX" tests that handled upgrades. If office can't handle such a simple upgrade then that's another Microsoft screwup. This has to be a common situation for people who find they need IIS, or VPN access to an office.

Expect more of a rant as I try and get office working over the weekend.
